Mary-Jane Crowley

Mary-Jane was a Detective with the Metropolitan Police for 25years, working in numerous departments, but specialising within Child Abuse investigations. She was a lead interviewer for children with complex needs and a SPOC for FGM. Mary-Jane then moved into education where she was the Designated Safeguarding Lead at a large comprehensive school and extended federation in the East End of London. Mary-Jane then worked for the BBC as a Senior Safeguarding Advisor, before joining The Scouts as the National Safeguarding Operations Manager. Mary-Jane has a BSc in Psychology and a Masters in Advanced Child Protection.

  • Developing high quality trustee oversight of safeguarding procedures with quarterly reporting, auditing and external assessment of safeguarding provision
  • Reviewing and enhancing appointment processes to ensure effective vetting and to deter volunteers with the wrong intentions from the outset
  • Devising robust training, peer review and reporting mechanisms to ensure all staff and volunteers meet safeguarding standards
  • Establishing a culture of a ‘safe space’ for children with challenge, transparency and communication procedures to prevent the violation of boundaries and codes of conduct
